Hello everyone.

rpeitzsch
09-04-10, 04:32 AM

My son wants to do lacrosse. Is it expensive? Oh......it's spelled scrumptious. :bg: LOL

rpeitzsch
09-04-10, 01:17 PM
It certainly isn't cheap. The helmet alone is over $100. You can usually find a company selling "starter" packs for around $325 that includes the helmet, gloves, elbow pads, chest pads, and a stick.

Its a great sport: fast with a lot of skill involved plus a fair amount of physical play. We saw Duke play Harvard at Harvard Stadium last weekend: Duke players are absolutely phenominal - they turned the game into a practice after scoring 4 goals in 3 minutes, and Harvard is nationally ranked! The final score was something like 15 - 5.

Mom's doing pretty okay, thanks for the well wishes!! I know what you mean about sewing though.... I sat there for a couple of hours doing some hemming and mending for her, all the while wondering why I still haven't taken in the one pair of black dress pants that's been folded on my work table for a month now!

(You know, I really struggled with saying "pants" in this post, since I know that what we call pants isn't at all what our Scottish friends call pants!! :rotf: But it just sounds odd for a Southerner to say slacks or trousers! Or at least THIS Southerner! )

jessierose
11-04-10, 04:41 PM
Haha! I thought about that when I read the word! I don't own any pants but I don't think I could use any word but pants!
Off to press my shirt. Gotta play a funeral in Laurel today.

I call all denim pants "Levis" regardless the brand. All others that are causual I call pants. If they are dressy, I call them slacks.
...............Double post automerged..............
Jess.....you don't own pants? I'm missing something huh? Cuz I just can't imagine you building that cool chicken coop in a skirt.

jessierose
11-04-10, 06:19 PM
I only own jeans. Oh, and overalls.
I have never owned dress pants or slacks or trousers. I have never ironed a pair of pants. I have never owned a khaki article of clothing. I have a couple skirts kicking around in the back of the closet for funerals and such.
I guess I am just a casual Friday kind of girl.

:rotf: I have no idea what they call these in the UK, but here, jeans are jeans, pants are long pants, trousers are something men wear, and slacks are what people over 75 call long pants. LOL. Of course the other variety are either knickers, or panties, unless you're a boy ( big boys included) in which case there are a few gross names for under garments.

Donovan did indeed have a good run with Everton, I was hoping that he'd get to stay, but I knew that there was no way that the LA Galaxy would let him. As for Beasley and Edu, Beasley's sort of ok when he's healthy, but he keeps getting hurt every turn. Edu is still young and raw, hopefully we'll see some maturing over the next year or two.

I'm still confused, is Utahns an unusual plural or not, if it isn't then they can't be unique, only individual Utahns can be unique in their own way. I get confused between American and English grammer. Sorry.

Lynyrd Skynyrd said "Alabamy" in a live version of Sweet Home Alabama (when he says "miss my Alabama once again" in most versions) and some Alabamians got offended and they edited it out. I think that's lame. He clearly loved Alabama.

That's because your from Texas and don't speak either. :poke:
Utahns is the term you'd use for multiple people from here. I.....would just be a utahn, singular.

Believe me.......we're all a unique bunch. When it comes down to it, aren't we all? Here is a question for you. Know what fry sauce is? Prolly not.....its a Utah thing. We share though.

Thank you. That has made my day already.

So you weren't referring to Utahns as an unusual plural but Utahns as singular, now i understand.

I didn't know what Fry Sauce was until i used the little Google box at the top and it seems my little nephew makes his own everytime he dollops a load of Ketchup and Mayo on his fries :bg:

KatieMc
15-04-10, 01:55 PM
I had to google fry sauce as well. Evidently I've eaten it all my life, only we add mustard. When we were little, my mom would make it when we had fries or corn dogs and call it "secret sauce". I still love secret sauce.

ppyper1
15-04-10, 02:40 PM
Jess.....fry sauce.......Mayo plus ketchup. Any self respecting seller of fries here will have it. Places like McDonald's don't have it...but will readily give you both ketchup and Mayo packets.

Add just a tidge of BBQ sauce for a smoky flavor too. Yum!

15-04-10, 03:42 PM
Love it. (I responded in your regional food thread, btw.)

I am bracing myself already for this weekend! It's going to be non-stop work! I have 3 cleaning jobs and 2 piping jobs (and a picnic Sunday afternoon!). I am going to have to start work at 5am on Saturday to be able to squeeze it all in. God help me!

How do you keep the stuff from falling off the pizza when you fry it the first time?

Robbie.Crow
15-04-10, 05:58 PM
Here's one for you, my new Mrs has been talking about it. A Scrunchie.

It's a half pizza, deep fried. Then coated in batter and deep fried again. It's no wonder Scotland has a high rate of heart disease. I like my chippy's but I couldn't face that.
To sum up that meal in one word is easy; "Mega!"

Churchill
15-04-10, 06:02 PM
It's not a traditional pizza, I dunno if you'll have seen the frozen ones you get which are vacuum sealed and the cheese looks like it's already melted on the pizza? It's one of those they use. Normally Cheese and Onion or just Cheese.

Speaking of food, I just had a really nice burger for lunch... and believe me, that's a very rare event here. New burger place opened just down the street, second time I've been there, good service and great burgers, the kind you have to eat with a knife and fork or they'd end up all over. This time it had blue cheese sauce, mushrooms sautιed in white wine and butter, hydroponic lettuce and I had them throw on a couple of slices of nice bacon.:drool::drool:

It's just a music/arts festival... I know y'all have those down there! But this one is held in the Cotton District of Starkville. My family actually lived in the Cotton District when I was born... both my grandparents worked at the cotton mill back then. The cotton mill is still there, but it's not a mill any more, it's an office building for some of the administrative offices of Mississippi State University.

So the festival doesn't actually celebrate cotton, it's just held in the old Cotton District.

Aww... thanks!

Fish tacos are too yum! They can apparently be made in a jillion different ways, with a jillion kinds of fish, but I've not yet met one I didn't like. The ones I've had at restaurants were always fried fish fillets in a flour tortilla with various things on top.... almost always a sauce like tartar sauce, with lettuce, tomato, and maybe some peppers, onions, etc. Alan knows I'm watching what I eat, so he baked his fish. He'd seasoned it with I-don't-remember-what, but it was good. He served it with diced fresh tomato, shredded lettuce, caramelized onions, and a chipotle sauce that looked like DeAnn's fry sauce.

That dressing is GOOD!! We didn't have it though... Alan made his and it was way chipotle-er than that. Almost too much for me.

We didn't have shredded cabbage, but if I remember correctly, the ones I had at Islamorada (when you and I had lunch there) had cabbage.

Fish tacos, when done right are really yummy! For a while, we had great fish tacos at work with lots of rice and tomatoes and corn salad and other fixings. You had your choice of either a fried or grilled fish. Then they started cutting back and now its just some fish in a soft taco shell with a VERY teeny bit of fixings - that's not so yummy.

I guess I'll have to wait til I can try one sometime to see what they are like and maybe try making them. We do have other hot sauces here but I haven't seen chipotle. I'll try to scan the imported food shelf at the supermarket this afternoon and see if they have it. It also depends on what part of the city the store is located in, so a couple of those in the cuico (rich snobs) parts of the city might have it.
Then they started cutting back and now its just some fish in a soft taco shell with a VERY teeny bit of fixings - that's not so yummy.
Wouldn't it be so much better if they were just honest about it and told people they had to charge a bit more for the same quality? In the long run that would surely pay off.

You'd think so, but many people feel that the food is already over priced, or at least the healthy stuff is. Hamburgers and french fries are about half the cost of a good salad.

Her symptoms are uber-gross. Can I just say that nothing will stay in her belly? And now she is off her food. There has been a Canine Influenza epidemic in the North America in the last year and the vet is quite concerned.
I've got her comfortable and she hasn't been sick since noon but she has nothing left in her. My poor muppy. I don't know what I would do without her. She is the reason I can sleep at night since the ex-man left. She is my guard dog and goes out with me when I have to go check on the animals in the middle of the night. She's my right-hand man.
She just must be okay!

Fingers crossed for you Jess - Is she taking on water?

omaha_scot
29-04-10, 11:20 PM
Is there much that can be done other than that? I'm guessing if it is a flu, then you just have to wait it out and treat symptoms then, huh. No shot or anything a vet can give her?

Hope she gets better soon.

Thanks, DeAnn!

No, Daz, she isn't. The vet says lots of times animals stop eating and drinking to let something run its course. But that's also how they get weak and little viruses kill them.
She is doing ok at the moment. Hasn't been sick again but also hasn't eaten or drank. I wish they had given her an IV of fluids!
And now I have to go pipe at some school an hour away. Oh, I hope she'll be ok.

I would get her to the vet again if she starts to worsen......a drip is a must if she's not drinking.

You're quite right - animals tend to try and "sleep off" illnesses but the fact she's not taking on water would be a worry to me.

Here's hoping she'll be fine.

She's still not drinking but she made it all afternoon without being sick again. She must be nearing notable dehydration. The vet said he would do a drip if she doesn't drink by tomorrow after lunch.
Sweet little thing is so sick and still got up and walked me out to put the goats in tonight. She's such a trooper.
Hoping for good news tomorrow!!!

Oh, ok, great for you. My elder stepson recently took a 3 month course as a personal trainer, to go with his upcoming degree in nutrition.

I was educated all in percentages and letter grades and somehow missed out on a base 4 education. The kids here in Chile get their marks in a base 7 system where a 7.0 is perfect. I have no idea where that one comes from or the logic behind it.

I'll let y'all know how it goes but I am already in a grump about it. I was asked to design one of the tables and accepted. Well, I wish I had not! Every other table there is set with antique bone china and crystal and heirloom silver with $100 floral arrangements....mine is set with mismatched Fiesta dishes and a collection of hands as a centerpiece. They told me people were using everyday dishes but literally NO ONE else did!
It was not supposed to be a hoity-toity event but has turned into one! :-(
Oh well....at least we get to have scones and lemon curd and clotted cream and little cucumber sandwiches. I am sure my sister and I will use our very most posh-ish English accents the whole time! I made it through! So glad, too! It was an ordeal! They ran out of food before half the tables were seated, one of the heels on my favorite red shoes broke, and they sold more tickets than there were places. Not one to watch anyone go hungry, I pulled all the extra people to my table and we cut scones and sandwiches in half and made the best.
Two of my dad's Turkish students were there and we had so much fun making jokes and trying to keep everyone entertained.
My shoes are ruined, I left there hungry and tired but glad I sucked it up and supported my little mum.

(Oh and by the way, only one person complained about my mismatched, poor-man's china. She was 6 and she wanted "fancy cups". I told her Jesus would pick my dishes over fine china anyday. That shut her up. heeheehee.)

KatieMc
03-05-10, 04:02 AM

Yes, ma'am! I sure did and she sure hushed up after that! Think about the Holy Grail scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Don't want her to choose poorly and end up like that scary Nazi man who turned into a skeleton.
The other tables really were amazing, though. Some had amazing 100 year old china and the flowers were just incredible! I cut some wildflowers for mine and one lady asked me how I grew them. My dad blirted out "They're weeds" but I held my chin up and told her that wildflowers would be welcome in the Queen's Own gardens if they were more difficult to grow. She agreed. (The Queen might not, though.)
I am still torn up about my dang shoes, though!!! ARGH.

JESSICA ROSALIE! You, young lady, have been ratted out. I was looking at some random lady's tea party pix (because your mum was tagged) and not even thinking that it could be the same one you were talking about.... until I came across a cute table that had YOU listed as the designer! It was lovely. And way cuter than... well, I won't name any names... never know who might be reading! :bg: But really, your table was precious!

Oh.... I'm sorry I'm just seeing this.... I've spent the past two nights with my mom while my dad was in the hospital and they don't have internet.

I don't quite look like Alice Cooper or a raccoon.... more like a very sickly version of myself. Most of the mascara stayed on my lashes, although they were all crossed up and glued together, and I just had sort of a greyness underneath. But really.... ick!

Now THAT sounds pretty gruesome... hey, wait, haven't you been learning to knit?:bolt:

Senor Harron!! (I don't have a squiggly to put over my n) I haven't talked to you in forever and now you say I'm gruesome? :sadkmc:

But yes, I am knitting my heart out... have made several hats for charity, and have a balaclava on the needles now for a co-worker who's about to deploy to Afghanistan. And I just started a prayer shawl for a friend. But I'm sure that's not why you asked. :kk:

Peace and quiet for a few hours!!! The lady folk have gone to the coast til tomorrow evening to visit my recently widowed sister in law and go to a great niece/cousin's 6th birthday party tomorrow.

That leave us three guys at home... Pipe has class at 8:30 in the morning and Taton just got home from his first week out of time on his internship. I think he has only 5 to go. He's working in a clinic about an hour and a half from here in a small community and staying in a house with a bunch of other interns from the university. I'll have to find out more details from him, but he seems happy enough about it.

Fredgie will be so happy... I decided to take my dear wife to a Brazilian restaurant for rodizio on Mom's Day. The kids are delighted, they all love that place and the food there.

Thanks, KK. I liked my table but you shoulda seen the others. Mine was the only..er...eclectic look of the bunch. I hope the picture wasn't a close-up because I counted no less than 10 chips in my tea cups! Doesn't bother me. Always makes me think of precious Chip the Teacup from Beauty and the Beast! Love him! I wish Angela Lansbury was the voice of my tea pot, though.
I so wish we were close enough to have a knit get together. I would love to be able to knit. I can crochet but not very well. I am trying hard not to be rough with my knitted washcloths that Granny made for River and I. Once they're gone...they're gone. :-(

I would be starting basically from scratch. Granny taught me both but I found that crocheting was a little more forgiving when I made mistakes. Is knitting terribly thinky? If I forget to pay close attention will I mess it all up?
