Steve

I knew we could get rid of Sean somehow.. lmao

@ ppyper.. Sorry.. i read it wrong in the 1st place.. lol..

Thats what happens when you dont read it twice.. lol

No worries Steve......apparently I don't read too well either. Sean isn't going to like that I inadvertantly started the plot to give him away. :bolt:

See......THIS is why I love the give-away threads. They are so much fun!! :bg:

Robbie told me at the worlds that he is pretty good at the washing and ironing as well.. lol

The only thing you have to give him will be a wee aprin and a pair of marrygolds.. lol

KatieMc

I'm not even sure what marrygolds are....

jessierose
02-10-10, 04:09 AM
I'm not sure either but I am quite enjoying picturing Sean and Robbie in little aprons. I know what I am going to dream about tonight!
I can hear it now...."Miss Jessica, we have finished the floors and windows. Would you like a foot massage and your car washed?"

Steve
02-10-10, 04:18 AM
Marrygolds are rubber gloves used in the kitchen..

I could do with an extra drummer. Can we give Daz away? I wanna win Daz.

jessierose
02-10-10, 11:10 PM
You DO NOT want Daz. He is literally nothing but trouble.
This has turned into a What-Would-You-Do-With-Your-Very-Own-Sean? thread.
Reminds me of those bachelor auctions we used to have to raise money for our theatre group years ago. I bought one when I was about 15, paid $200 for him and made him do all the hard stuff pulling the engine from my VW bus.
Of course...the engine was the size of a meatloaf so it wasn't really worth $200 but he was kinda cute and I was kinda 15 so it was a fun day.

ppyper1
03-10-10, 12:01 AM
But.....but
....he drums and he has a cool accent. Ya
....if he's on a giveaway thread ill take him. :bg:

Jess......hows the arm?
my mind is mush but I only have one tune to learn, two to memorize...all by Friday.

jessierose
03-10-10, 12:04 AM
He does drum and have a cool accent. Fair enough.

The arm is doing some better. Piping seems to be good PT. It hurts like the devil after but I am being able to play longer everyday and it's moving better.
Wish I could skip PT and pipe.
I am in memorize mode, too. Have a reel that doesn't want to stick in my head and a half a piobaireachd that is too similar to another one and I keep drifting back and forth between them. Blah.

janelleTG
03-10-10, 02:00 AM
Well I'll have a Sean AND a Daz please. I'm feeling greedy hehe
Memorizing tunes.....ahhhhhhhhh...wouldn't be too bad except some people expect me to remember the tune just like whats on the paper...... G D E ...hey at least i remembered to put A gracenote in there. Tutors and Pipe Majors are such picky people some times :poke:

Is it SO hard to play a GDE. G.........DE. Not GDE. (learning Drunken piper for next year. I swear, if I hear one more round GDE I'll pummel the piper who does it.)

Wait.......just proved Janelle's point. :banghead:

And you can't have Daz....I spoke first. :bg:

jessierose
03-10-10, 03:53 AM
It's going to go straight to Daz's head that you women are fighting over him.
Ask Daz sometime about the time he was soooo boring that the girl that was hanging out with him had to go get pished in the beer tent just to stay awake. Seriously. I heard that that happened.

Off to bed. LONG day tomorrow. Have to be at work at 5am and then to the prison to see a friend and then piping, piping, piping. Makes me tired just thinking of it.
Goodnight, y'all!

Steve
03-10-10, 04:28 AM
Excuse me miss rose..

Boring.. ??? .. I dont think so.. You decided to go on the lash while Daz meself and Ken listened to all of G2 final..

Its just a girl thing.. You Jessierose being part time enthuiasts and all that.. lol

03-10-10, 04:56 AM
Well it occurs to me that I could start my own band.... so I'll take about seven Seans, three Dazs... no wait, make that two Dazs and a Robbie (Lord knows one is enough), two Jennys, and an umm.... hmmm.... who plays bass around here?

janelleTG

I've thought and thought and can't come up with a reason to beat your first dibs...oh wait a minute, yes I can. Daz reaaaaally wants to spend some time living in Aus, so that may give me the upper hand...then again, Utah would be a pretty cool place to hang out at for a year.

Well it occurs to me that I could start my own band.... so I'll take about seven Seans, three Dazs... no wait, make that two Dazs and a Robbie (Lord knows one is enough), two Jennys, and an umm.... hmmm.... who plays bass around here?

oh oh oh ...me! very versatile little bands person I am. I play tenor and a little bass and one day I may be of some use as a piper, as long as you put me in the middle where I can hide. Just don't ask me to play snare, i really suck at that.
Of course if you want a good Bass player you're better off with Mike Cole or Pete Walen, BUT you can't have them 'cause I want them both LOL told you all I was feeling greedy.

Speaking of Pete, haven't seem him around lately. I hope he's just busy being a super Grandad and all is well.

KatieMc
03-10-10, 06:08 AM
Then I guess I need to place my order for three Jennys... two on tenor and one on bass. Aww what the heck, make it four. We'll stick the other one in the middle of the pipe corps just for fun! :bg:

I'm perplexed. I was drawn in by the thread's title (which I took to be an offer of something for nothing) but I can't figure out the rules of the contest.

Are there any Rules? If so, what are they? If there are no Rules (& I'm fine with that), what are posters (contestants?) to do and how is a "winner" determined.

Just curious.

Modern Classics for the snare drum, Volume One.

My sister-in-law sells these little things that melt smelly wax...like candle substitutes or something...called Scentsy. Her whole house smells amazing so I got some and it turned out I am violently allergic! I had hives and couldn't see anything and couldn't breathe!

I am taking group lessons in Tennis, and the silly instructor not only wants us to hit the ball over the net, but stay in the courts, and land in these little boxes. I mean really. :bg:

Actually it is quite fun, I have done my usual athletic prowess, the first night I fell into the net, which left a very nasty bruise for about 4 weeks, last lesson on Wednesday, I ended up on my backside when my foot drug while running back to hit a ball. Yesterday I got my second set of pipes back. Actually they were my first set, I loaned them to a new piper in the band two years ago. I now have a foul weather set (polypenco) and my main set.

The advantage is I can keep the out of the bag and set to go in my room so I can pick them up and play easily. I should be able to practice more since they will be setting there looking at me. :bg:

Now to reed up the chanter and start playing. I reworked the drones last night for me. It is interesting since they are Dunbar with aHenderson sound (bold drones) and my main set are Gibson's with a MacDougal sound (blended drones)

Now when I compete, I just need to find out what sound the judges prefer. :bg:

However, I've little experience of both sets. (at least no -ones told me if thats been what they are playing)

What sound do YOU prefer?

captn kev
10-10-10, 05:55 PM
wow I would guess your foul weather may be more about humidity than cold. remeberance day parades always test your mettal around here as you could leave an armory at 20 celcius and play in the great outdoors at -10 celcius

Just dropped off the piping instructor (my instructor as well) at the airport and waiting to pick up my parents, so I'm just sitting here for a bit.

Wow....my pipes sound great! and..they are super easy, but not too easy. Effortless maybe. I don't get it, I do the same things to them that he does, but they obey him. :(

I'm tired too....never did so much piping in two days. My lip is all but dragging on the floor.

Can't wait for te season to start so we can play our new tunes. :bg:

captn kev
10-10-10, 10:30 PM

I prefer the MacDougal sound my self. Overall just nicer with more of the harmonics from the drones.

The Henderson sound is probably better with a band in a parade setting, giving that bold sound to the crowd.

The main reason I have two sets is I didn't want to give up my first set when I found a great deal on some "Sticks and Stocks for my Gibsons. So I completed the set and loaned out my first set. They have earned two people their kilts in my band now.

wow I would guess your foul weather may be more about humidity than cold. remeberance day parades always test your mettal around here as you could leave an armory at 20 celcius and play in the great outdoors at -10 celcius

For me, foul weather is rain etc. Last spring we did a Steeplechase. We were on the field and it started to rain pretty heavy with a few thunder claps that were in time with our bass drum. The pulled the dogs and the Budwiser Clydsales(sp) off the field but left the pipers on. Now I will have my poly set instead of ABW for rainy gigs. :bg:

My kids have had a wet weather day at home, so I decided it was a good chance to give them some extra work to help improve thier English skills. That was 3 hours ago. I've downloaded a heap of stuff, but they're doing the activities quicker than I can print them off. I've just given them some harder activities so hopefully it will keep them busy a little longer.

They get to stay home from school when it's wet??! Wow. I wish we had gotten to stay home from school when it was hot!

I made it through another day of work. It was so gross! I cleaned this old mansion downtown. It grew as I cleaned it! I swear there were 3 bedrooms when I started and 6 by the time I was done...plus office, 2 dining rooms, dressing room, nursery, mud room, pantry, and...no joke...uniform room. Who has a uniform room??? All of these are just fancy names posh people give bedrooms! At least it was all wood floors. I love mopping wood floors. They were so shiny and smelled good when I left. I would wear Murphys Oil Soap as perfume if it wouldn't weird people out.

We had "snow days" at school, but NEVER EVER used them. I kid you not. I NEVER stayed home from school because the snow was too bad. Even when it took 15 minutes just to get out of the driveway because the snow was so deep, school was not canceled.

LOL Jessie, they don't normally get a day off when it's raining, except for those times when it's near cyclonic conditions and the roads are all flooded. We've had 3 days of torrential rain.

Our schools actually have rules for the heat. Once the temperature gets to (I think) 103F, they send the kids home, unless the school is air conditioned. If a storm is coming through that has been classified as dangerous they send as many kids home as possible, or you can choose to just go and pick them up. Doesn't happen a lot but often enough.

BTW how do you manage to do all that cleaning with your sore shoulder? Must be tough.

I saw the article on Facebook! Glad they were at home!
Yeah, the cleaning can be tricky. I try to think of it as physical therapy and rehab that I am paid to do! I have had to get creative when certain jobs cause lots of pain. Mopping has been the worst because I can't press down on the mop. I have done several floors on my knees with a hand scrubber just so I didn't have to try to mop.
It's getting better all the time, though. I am easing back into everything pretty well. The only thing I have been completely unable to do (that I could do before, that is) is get on a horse from ground level. When I am out teaching riding lessons, I have to sneak around to the back of the barn and use a little step ladder. I just can't pull myself into the saddle with that arm yet. Soon enough, though! :-)

My bargain of the week...... I've been looking for shoes for one of the kids to wear to a wedding in a month. She needs something dressy, but at 12 years of age, she isn't likely to wear them a lot before she grows out of them. I've been looking on line, and could probably get some for about $50 (groan, for a 12 year old) but they all have 4 inch heels. Poppped into the local charity shop yesterday and found some nice slip ons with a 2 inch heel, looks like they have never been worn, only $7.50 Bargain!
I bought 4 things all up and only spent $11.00. So I'm happy.

Love the charity shops! We have kind of a charity shop only it has all new stuff from stores that burn or flood or close down. Last week I got a GORGEOUS chocolate brown down comforter (in my weird bed size, too!) for $5, a new cold weather sleeping bag for River for $1, and a camp cot with the coolest mattress ever for $7. I was so happy! The comforter is the lovliest thing in my house!

Bad news from the doc today...I have to have surgery, after all. My shoulder is nowhere near the right place in the socket because I over-stretched the capsule around it and it's not snapping back. I am bummed about it but so ready to feel normal again that I guess I am okay with it. What a rollercoaster this has been, though.
The worst part....I have to see a different doctor now! I will miss my good smelling one!

Jessie, we have a couple of charity shops just like that. The last few dresses I've bought for the girls still had the boutique labels on them.

It's a shame surgery is necessary. But as you say you want it fixed and to feel normal again. It's a lot worse when they decide surgery isn't an option, but it never going to be the same again.

FUNNIEST thing EVER happened last night!!

UPB is ordering new andantes for the band. We're getting sparkly orange ones. :bg: (attached photo of one)

So, I get the final approval from the band treasurer and I text the guy who I'm getting them from to go ahead and order them. He txts back "I think Yellow wold look better". I'm thinking "What??" so we txt back and forth this banter and I finally say "Are you being difficult on purpose??" He answers back "yes" (we're good friends....so I can talk to him like that.)

So, fast forward a week (yesterday). I get a text out of the blue. "How's the sparkle going?" I'm thinking "What do you mean?? Order it already!" LOL. So we go into another round of "I don't think orange will go with green" and a bunch of other stuff that makes me wonder if the guy is drunk texting me.

In the middle of all these texts I get frusterated and send him an email with the same picture that I just attached and say stuff like, "Here is what it looks like, it really looks nice. Am I misunderstanding something??"

He emails back saying "No, I think it looks great, that's what I'm shooting to get for you."

I'm sitting there in total disbelief thinking this guy has GOT to be hammered, and that I'm going to have to call his wife and see WHY he is going all bi-polar on me. (no disrespect to those who are truly bi-polar).

Then the texting guy FINALLY tells me that I've been texting the wrong number. It's a different person, not in Salt Lake City, but in LA. I happen to have two facebook friends with the same name and Mr. LA somehow got synced with the Salt Lake guy in my phone. :rotf: :rotf: I was SOOOOOO frusterated last night, and today I can hardly stop laughing!

It seems to me that Pipes are real homebodies, and don't like a change of environment. The biggest issue here is wet weather. I mean, how can an instrument predominantly from Scotland not like the rain :rotf: Since most of our rain comes and goes in a matter of hours, on those occasions when it drizzles all day or worse, rains for a few days, the pipes get difficult.

I agree pipes can be "moody" and no doubt react to different climates, however, I think everything should be taken in your stride. Just deal with it as you see fit.

A lot of it is more a physical challenge, the only time I really suffered was playing at 6,000 feet, and it should be pointed out I had a hangove too.

I've played in Jungle, Desert, Snow, Rain, all with a sheepskin bag. I may have been young and stupid half the time, but apart from sweating buckets, the pipes worked fine. With one exeption. in -27, my chanter reed froze solid, and it was game over.

Keep yourself and your pipes fit and you'll sound just fine wherever you are.

I think the reason you high altitude guys are more comfortable at lower levels is the same reason runners train at high altitudes. More Oxygen available down here, and you guys are used to less.

18-10-10, 04:21 PM
I think I am pretty good with pipe maintenence and keeping them going well but going from an 90 degree evening to a 40 degree morning made my chanter reed say "WTH??" It was flat and weezy sounding. I swear it tickled in my ear. It was so gross.
I cannot bear to sound like that. If my pipes sound like that that is literally all I will be thinking about while I play.

Keep your fingers crossed for me! River is getting his first rifle for Christmas and I want to be the one teaching the book class not one of these "basic hunting safety" guys. Just not good enough.

Good luck......you could apply for music too. If he needs astronomy or space exploration give me a holler. I'm certified for those as well as music. :bg:

They are going to let me do it if I retake the adult firearms safety course at Camp Shelby. No probs there. The only problem will be The Dads. They fight me tooth and nail when I teach anything. I will show those jerks who's boss! just kidding. I'll play nice.
Also, my dad is going to do the chemistry merit badge for River's patrol. River is so excited he can't stand it. I think he wishes Papa did Scouts with him more than his boring old mother.

Child 1...this is harder than I thought it was going to be, so I'll just sulk a bit
Child 2... (usually clumsy, all legs and arms) ... like this? (Following the step easily)
Child 3.. when I do this.. what about this..and when do i do this..and what do I do with this ..

Sad day here today. Was volunteering in a statewide search for a missing mom and fellow homeschooler. She was just found dead in her van. Looks like murder but they're not saying for sure yet. Just graduated college herself, finished homeschooling her kids and became a grandma and then is killed at 59. So sad. I am so anxious to hear what happened.

How's everyone around here?

Oh man, that's horrible Jess. I hope you're doing ok, Being involved in the search, makes you emotionally involved and can be hard sometimes.

I've taught kids in the past, but as you say teaching your own kids is the hardest. I knew the eldest would be a challenge, although she never is for independent teachers. It's just part of her personality. BUT I've taught her to sew and cook, and got her past the birls and tarlouths when she was learning pc, so i guess I can manage this.
Problem is dance teachers around here have such demanding expectations, that don't fit with our plan for the girls dancing, so the easier answer was to teach them myself.

Nice! Shopping sounds like just what I need!

Yeah, it was tough watching that family go through that. She was not the kind of lady who would up and leave with no reason to be away from her family so I think we all thought she was dead in the backs of our minds. You hold out hope, though and this time it was quite crushing. I am just anxious for the autopsy report and police reports to come out. She was a very educated, outspoken black lady and I am just praying it wasn't racially motivated and that she didn't suffer anything horrible at the end.

Anyway....in brighter news...mom's coming over today to help me clean house. A few things are still hard with the wobbly wing so she's coming to help! YAHOOO!

I'm off to the Dental hospital today, for one of my kids, so they can asses whether they think braces will correct a major over bite. Just can't see it myself, but then I'm not a dentist. I had a blind student today who liked having everything described to her during her horse riding lesson. It was amazing! At first it was so much work figuring out how to describe the windmill we rode past to a little kid who has never seen one and how to explain what all the other horses look like when she asked.
She said the most amazing thing when I asked her about reading Braille (which she has since she was very young). She said she feels sorry for people who don't read it because to read Braille is to touch words and have them touch you back. She's 10! Blew my mind!
And, I had my dear, sweet Cassie who is severly autistic and almost completely non-verbal. She grabbed my face in her hands today and said "Shessie...GO! GO!" How could I say no to that! We trotted until I couldn't lift my cowboy boots anymore!
What a job, eh??? I wish it was an everyday job. It makes me far happier than cleaning a smelly pub. (I am thankful for the pub job, too, though. Don't get me wrong.)

What a great story. Thanks jessie.

I was practising today, when a young chap knocked on my door. "I thought I heard real bagpipes" he said. Turns out he is of Irish descent and has spent a lot of time researching his family. Not just the usual stuff, but has made a point of learning his family history from his grandmothers.
So he asked if i could play him an Irish tune. Since I only know 2, I played Wearing the Green, not all that well I might add, as it's the first time I've tried playing it on my pipes.
He seems to be a nice kid, well young man really, but I hope my practising in my own lounge room doesn't encourage too many people to come knocking on my front door.

Well, we are in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins Hospital with our daughter. Met the transplant Dr., and we got great news (or at least hope)! our kidney transplant looks like it will move forward! More Drs. tomorrow. Then, she will have more procedures and tests... Then we will be tested as donor matches (that is down the line)! This is not a guarantee, but the next step forward. This has been a long 15 years, but hopefully, she will see some reprieve from the pain.

This is the greatest news and hope we have heard in a long time!

How's that for a super happy story!

That is a SUPER happy story. Also, one with some perspective-shifting powers.
I didn't know your daughter was sick. I am so glad some good stuff is in sight for her! Wish I was close enough to offer a kidney. I have always thought it was neat that we come with a few spare parts. I pipe for the donor's organization here and the stories of things they can do with live donors now are amazing!
I know I have told this before but my sister donated a lobe of her lung to my Godmother's grandson who had CF. It was incredible! She was only the second live lung donor in the US. I am pretty proud of her!
Hang in there and thanks for the cheering story! Your kiddo is in my prayers!

Fun pics! I got so much flak last night at the pub for not being in costume. I made my sister a wicked set of old lady boobs, though! She and her hubby were elderly for Halloween. I did their make-up and made costumes. They're goobs.
My friend Susan and I were going to be Pvt. Pile and Sgt. Hartman from Full Metal Jacket but she put on a few pounds because of fertility treatments and couldn't fit into her hubby's uniform anymore. (He was, apparently, about 94 pounds because she is only about 104 dripping wet.) It was gonnna be fun.
So, Susan and her husband went as Goose and Maverick and I went as Jessie.
We had decided to do FMJ because (it's a great film and) we had the crap to do it easily. Halloween isn't a holiday we have in Australia, although the shops have been trying to push it the last few years. One of the markets had Pumkpkins for carving . They were a good size and shape, just like the ones you see in the hundreds of emails you get of pictures of carved pumpkins, but they wanted $22 each for them. What???? at that price I'd wamt it carved and framed. Not that I would have bought one at any price, since we don't do Halloween LOL

Today is a beautiful day. My wife and I (mostly my wife) do an All Souls Remembrance service at our Church's Cemetery. the weather was overcast, the air was damp and breezy, and about 55 F. I pipe a bit prior to and after the service. Just as the service was about to start, but clouds seemed to dissipate and the sun came out. Beautiful day for piping! A nice turnout, but mostly older folks.

That sounds nice. I would rather be piping that stuck at work.

I was asked to pipe at my ex-wifes' grandfather's funeral on Wednesday. It is supposed to be sunny and about 63 F. Sounds great, other than I am having difficulty getting out of work. I think they will go without a piper if I can't because of cost. I feel bad. My ex-mother-in-law sounds understanding. Good thing she is my ex-mother-in-law.

I have a drone reed that wont settle anyway, I would hate to have it go bad on me during a funeral.

I piped at my father-in-laws internment of the ashes on Friday. It was my first solo performance and only the 2nd time I've actually played in public. I was a little concerned, because my m-i-l hates bagpipes, but it was her that insisted I play for dad. All went well fortunately.
The most nerve racking thing was my lack of confidence in tuning my pipes.

Jessie, I de-clutter about 4 times a year, and every time I say the same thing. I need two more rooms in my house. A music room and a room for 'stuff' .

I remember my first funeral. It was in Las Vegas I was so worried that I would not be able to tune my pipes with the altitude change from here. All went ok.

Jessie, we just moved from a little 2 bedroom apartment to a decent sized house and I could not believe the stuff we moved. We almost have too much for the house. I have no idea how we fit it in that apartment.

It is amazing how fast we can accumulate "Stuff". George Carlin did a great bit about "Stuff"

I don't want to move ever again, because I don't want to have to deal with that. Two moves in two years was enough for me. :faint:
