Default Pipe Majors' Wheel of Fortune Competition 2006

The City of Edinburgh Pipes & Drums is pleased to announce the inaugural PIPE MAJORS' WHEEL OF FORTUNE COMPETITION to be held at the Thomas Morton Hall (Leith Town Hall), Ferry Road, Leith, Edinburgh, on Saturday 18 November 2006 at 1pm.

The competition is of a very different format to most other solo piping competitions and aims to be a highly enjoyable day for competitors and spectators alike.

Competitors

PM Derek Graham (PM City of Edinburgh Pipes & Drums)

PM Brian Elrick (PM of Tayside Universities Officer Training Corps, and member of Lothian & Borders Police and ex-Vale of Atholl)

PM Stewart McKenzie (PM of the Manawatu Scottish Society Pipe Band (NZ))

PM Brian Lamond (PM of Dysart & Dundonald Pipe Band)

James Murray (ex-PM of Dysart & Dundonald and currently of Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band)

Judges

Pipe Major Ian Duncan and Pipe Major Gordon Campbell

Competition Format

Each of the Pipe Majors will play a short selection of their own choice to get the pipes settled. They will then play a March, Strathspey & Reel. This is followed by the main Pipe Majors' "Wheel of Fortune" event.

On the Wheel of fortune there are 12 categories of tune:

Gordon Duncan composition
Own composition
Breton composition
Austurian/Galician composition
G. S. Maclennan composition
Irish Jigs
Irish Reels
Gaelic Slow Air
Irish Slow Air
Polka
Hornpipe
9/8 March

The tunes each competitor will play depends on the categories the "Golden Chanter" stops on. The Golden Chanter will be spun a number of times so that each competitor draws 5 categories of the 12. Each Pipe Major will then select a tune from each of the 5 categories they draw and put them together into a set and then perform them. At some stage, each competitor is required to tell a joke.

Prizes

1st prize - £500
2nd prize - £300
3rd prize - £150
Dress & Deportment - £50
Best joke prize also

There will be full bar services and food available at the hall.

The City of Edinburgh Pipes & Drums hope this contest will be enjoyable day for everybody, at a time of year when there are not a great deal of piping and drumming events taking place. We also hope to develop the contest in years to come. We look forward to seeing you there. If you have any queries, please email me at bagpipers@uk2.net

Sounds excellent, really good idea! Unfortunately I'm working on Saturday and won't be able to make it.

You should hold it in the evening ... to suit me lol.

Hope it all goes well mate.

Sounds like an excellent night. Wish I could make it.

One question....why is it called the wheel of fortune? Is it like the TV programme where you have to guess names of things?

There was a wheel with 12 categories of tune on it. The "Golden Chanter" on the wheel was spun and the competitors had to play whatever tune category the golden chanter landed on.
