The way I teach my pupils to play rolls and which has been a very successful system for me and my students is:
When each student has mastered the open to closed roll "mammy daddy"
I start them on 5,7.9. and 3 pace rolls
I start from the "buzz" or pulse stage:

5 STROKE ROLL: play very slowly to begin with a very "loose buzz" sound.

buzz - buzz - tap, the last buzz must be kept down on the pad or drum until the final tap has been played.
gradually increase tempo until a nice smooth roll is achieved, all your rolls will be sustained to their true value.
once you have mastered this method you will I guarantee play a better roll
7 STROKE ROLL :BUZZ -BUZZ-BUZZ-TAP
9 STROKE ROLL: BUZZ-BUZZ-BUZZ-BUZZ TAP
3 PACE ROLL: BUZZ START RIGHT HAND----FINISH RIGHT HAND TAP
