Saturday July 12th sees New Zealand's top pipe band (as well as one of the leading band's in the world) Manawatu play exclusively in London at our monthly SPSL evening in the Mudlark.
At last year's World Pipe Band Championships they were placed 9th overall in Grade 1, but 7th place in the piping, (just behind the likes of Shotts, FMM and SFU). Now we are privileged to have a pivotal section of their pipe corps, including their Pipe Major, Stewart McKenzie, provide us with an evening of rare entertainment of quartet and solo piping. This promises to be a first class evening and a not to be missed opportunity. I can't recall when a Grade 1 band last appeared in the capital. In February this year Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band won the New Zealand Pipe Band Championships, convincingly restating their claim as an outstanding Grade 1 band. This was their 7th consecutive win in that competition. Anyone who has heard their much acclaimed album The Calling would agree with their creativity and talent as an outstanding outfit. Add some cold beer and the portents are good for a great evening. Ticket prices £10 SPSL members £12.50 non members. Upstairs at the Mudlark. opposite Glaziers Hall 4 Montague Close London SE1 9DA Nearest Tube, London Bridge Commences 7.30 p.m. www.scottishpipingsocietyoflondon.com |

Man it sucks living over here. I would love to see some of these concerts. When I'm rich I'm gonna start flying over to check them out.

Might have to have alook at this one....they have a fantastic sound.
Really don't mean to be picky (can't help it!) but it wasn't their seventh consecutive win as New Zealand Police won the nationals in 2007. Manawatu chose not to compete due to the untimely death of Bass drummer Jock McKenzie (father of PM and LD) Thanks Tcheuchterloon for the timely info. Regards Daz

I'm taking a guess and saying that the recital will probably be from their UK based players and not the guys from NZ? Hope Only a guess I could be wrong! Regards Daz

About half the band are in the UK this summer, so competing at the World's is out. We thought we'd give them something to do in case they got up to mischief. Some guy turned up the other week, he was awfy entertaining, but he looked like he might be leading them astray. (Manawatu members, including PM Stewart MacKenzie, on the right). |
