On a Dutch PB forum a recent thread is attracting a lot of interest. The Netherlands is only a small country and yet we have 33 registered 'pipe bands', a number that is still growing(!). Quite a few of these 'bands' are spin offs of long time existing bands. People that e.g. didn't agree with "something" and decided to start their own band. A statement is made that there are "too many 'bands'", too many people who think they know it all, too many (wannabe) PM's and LD's. It is also said there are not enough fish in the sea to feed these bands and not enough instructors to cope with this many bands - thus bringing down the over all quality of our piping scene. There seem to be a lot of 'grand egos' in the pipe band scene, at least in these parts, that will not transfer to another existing group but rather start their own.
I wonder if this is unique to NL? and how other areas/countries are dealing with this (if at all ...) D./
