Default Great Cooking Article

I happened on this article in the NY Times Magazine preview, read a bit of it and found it quite accurate and fascinating. I printed it out (13 pages) to read in full later.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/02/ma...l?ref=magazine

I find the author's comments about such shows as the Iron Chef (watched it maybe 3 times) and Hell's Kitchen (Ramsay is such a profane *sshole that I only watched it a couple of times) are right on, to be compared with watching wrestling or roller derby rather than being cooking shows.

Fortunately we don't get the Food Network here so I'm spared a lot of the shows he mentioned, but as of a few weeks ago we do have Rachel Rae inflicted upon us. Gotta love her way of cooking a meal... throw in a few prepared, prepackaged ingredients (which nobody outside of the USA and maybe Canada has access to) and "Wham, bam, thank you ma'am, dinner is served."

Fortunately we do have access to some very good cooking shows, many made in Latin America, and of the same genre as Julia Child's were. Some of us do love to cook and we want to learn new things, new ideas, new concepts. Abusing people in the kitchen just doesn't seem to fit.

I'm a firm believer in the old saying "you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar" If you go away feeling demeaned and picked on you won't have the drive that you need to get better. You'll have drive alright, ("I'll show that so and so!") but that kind of drive is not going to propell you forward. If you are praised for the good that you do, you are motivated even more so to repeat what you did.

The sandwich method is what I like to use. Make a positive comment, point out something that needs work, end with another positive comment.

IE, "Hey, great birl! Let's clean up your d-throws. I can tell you've been working on it, nice job."

I love the sandwich method! I taught it to my brothers when they got married. I think when dealing with a wife a man cannot go wrong ending the sandwich with "You're pretty!" i.e.: "Honey, thank you so much for picking me up from work. It would have been better if you hadn't bought $200 shoes on the way. You're pretty."
There would be so much less divorce if we all used the sandwich method!
